Roof Repair Advice

If your roof is in need of urgent repair, you have come to the right place. I am not a roofing contractor, but I have just finished replacing the roof on my home when the old one failed. The contractor I called in helped me to assess the condition of my old roof and to choose the right type of material to replace it with. He carried out the work quickly and kept me informed about what he was doing. I have learnt so much from the experience that I wanted to share my new found knowledge with the rest of the world.

Steps to Roof Restoration

by Krin Rodriguez

Roof restoration activities are processes that are carried out on your roof to return it to its new-like condition. They can involve activities like cleaning, repair, application of coatings and treatments and replacement of parts or the whole roof. Here's what you need to know about the steps to roof restoration:

Step One: Identification of the Need to Restore Your Roof

Over time, your roof tends to get old; depending on the type of roof you have, you may notice signs of wear and tear.

Sheet metal roofs usually exhibit loss of colour from continuous exposure to harmful UV rays. They also experience corrosion and rust that leads to holes and worn out patches.

Tile roofs usually show signs of mould growth, dirt and chipping, breaking or cracking of tiles.

You can either notice this when you inspect your roof, experience leakage or you are planning on selling your house (you may take a look at your roof and find it not visually appealing).

Step Two: Contact A Reputable Roof Restoration Company

Depending on the type of roof you have, you can either contact a sheet metal or tile roofing contractor.

The contractor visits your premises to conduct a thorough and professional roof inspection. Your roof might also be cleaned to expose areas hidden under the dirt. After the inspection, they develop a fully detailed report that shows the extent of your roof damage and what needs to be done to restore it. You can also get an accurate quotation at this point.

Step Three: Agreement and Giving the Go-Ahead

Once you are presented with the inspection report, it is explained to you in detail for better understanding. Ask as many questions as you want to ensure you have fully understood it. You can then give the go-ahead for the commencement of the restorative measures as you make payments. Some roof restoration companies may require the full amount in advance while others may require a portion of the amount first.

Step Four: Application of Restoration Measures

  • Sheet metal roofing – based on the inspection report, your roof might be repainted or replaced. Severely corroded or rusted parts need to be completely replaced; repairs would mean patchwork, which does not usually look good.
  • Tile roofing – based on the inspection report, some tiles may need repair and others might require to be replaced, especially those that are completely damaged. In the case of mould, the tiles are usually cleaned and a mould treatment applied. The treatment ensures that mould does not grow on the tiles in the future.
