Roof Repair Advice

If your roof is in need of urgent repair, you have come to the right place. I am not a roofing contractor, but I have just finished replacing the roof on my home when the old one failed. The contractor I called in helped me to assess the condition of my old roof and to choose the right type of material to replace it with. He carried out the work quickly and kept me informed about what he was doing. I have learnt so much from the experience that I wanted to share my new found knowledge with the rest of the world.

Shingle Bells: The Advantages Of Choosing Metal Tiles Over Traditional Tiles And Shingles For Your Roof

by Krin Rodriguez

While tastes and fads in home design may come and go, some looks for your home will never go out of style. Just like real hardwood flooring and white bathroom suites, a roof covered with clay or stone tiles and shingles is one of these timeless visual accents, and a traditionally tiled roof can be enormously attractive to the new home builder or renovator.

Unfortunately, while these venerable roofing materials still have a lot going for them, clay and stone tiles can fall short when it comes to withstanding high winds and are hardly the most durable of roof coverings. This doesn't mean that you should abandon the idea of a beautifully tiled roof entirely, however. By opting for modern, metal roofing tiles, you can create the desired look of a freshly-tiled roof while enjoying a host of other advantages.

What are the advantages of choosing metal roof tiles over traditional tiles?

As you can imagine, metal roofing tiles are enormously durable and can take a beating from falling branches, chimney pots and other heavy impacts without cracking, shattering or compromising the integrity of the roof. Rust is not an issue, as metal roofing tiles are pre-coated with long-lasting anti-rust coatings prior to sale (paint and powder coatings are popular and attractive choices).

Attractive looks

If you haven't encountered metal roofing tiles before, you might be imagining drab, grey metal tiles. Nothing could be further from the truth, and metal tiles can be coated with a dizzying array of paints and surface treatments. Practically any colour you can imagine can be applied to your tiles, and if you're willing to spend a little more, attractive clay-look and stone-look coatings give you all the advantages of metal tiles while appearing practically indistinguishable from the real thing.

Low prices

Even the most expensive, stone-look metal tiles are generally considerably cheaper than either clay or stone tiles and are ideal for covering larger roofs affordably without compromising on looks or quality. Because they are much lighter than clay and stone tiles and are designed to be easy to fit, a metal tile roof can also be assembled and completed more quickly, saving you money on labour costs as well as helping to keep your build project on schedule.

Wind resistance

Metal tiles are especially prized by roofing contractors working in high-wind areas, as they are designed and shaped to resist winds without being blown off the roof. Cyclone-rated tiles are available if you live in areas commonly ravaged by gale-force winds.

Low maintenance

The durability of metal tiles means they very rarely have to be repaired or replaced, while their smooth surfaces prevent the accumulation of mould and lichen and prevent dirt and detritus from becoming ingrained. Consequently, metal tile roofs are extremely easy to maintain and will stay looking new for decades with a minimum of effort.
